"Lost in Translation"
I wrote
Since I have nothing to do, I will write in French.
Why not, right?
It's been too long since I spoke to anyone in this language.
The last time was year 2000, in Paris France where I spent my holidays
for one week with my sister. I simply adore that country to death.
I also recall one time in Dubai. George accompanied me to meet up with my Lebanese friend who lived in Guinea Bissau. He spoke only French & Arabic.
It was hilarious. But he was very kind and gave me a lot of pasalubongs.
Mmmm darn! What was his name again???
It was great that George also speaks French and naturally, Arabic. He helped me when I was at a lost for the correct words.
Oh yes! Mazen! Yes, that's it. Mazen is his name.
Alright that's all. I will roll back to English now.
It's easier.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breaths away.

"Agassi: He plays, he scores, he conquers" Sort of!
I was flipping through the TV channels last night after dinner.
In search of something to watch after the evening news.
I chanced upon the Solar Sports channel.
I didn't even know this channel existed.
They were broadcasting the Australian Open.
The semi final tennis match between Marat Safin & Andre Agassi.
It was just the beginning of the first set so I said ok what the heck.
I love watching tennis.
I played tennis for a few months in Dubai.
No formal lessons.
I would tag along with my friends, Ruby, Marian & Carol.
We would go to Safa Park on Tuesdays.
Al Nasr Leisureland on Wednesdays.
Somewhere behind Port Rashid on Fridays.
We even watched the Dubai Open tournament at the Aviation Club.
They encouraged me to try it.
They even gave me a tennis racket for my birthday.
It was fun while it lasted. Then summer came and I quit.
Summers in Dubai is like living in hell.
The humidity level is suffocating especially in the evenings.
I told myself ... Geez I'm not going to kill myself playing tennis.
Back to the Safin vs Agassi match.
Agassi, by the way, reminds me so much of my immediate ex bf.
In terms of his features not his tennis skills.
I don't think Wajdi could play tennis even if his life depended on it.
The 6'4 Russian defeated the defending champion in a stunning five set victory. But I read that online at the official website of the tournament.
By the third set of the game, I couldn't keep my eyes open so I went to bed.
It was way past my self imposed bed time.

"You've got Mail"
I'm guilty of sending a lot of forwarded emails.
To my friends, acquaintances and relatives.
I don't know if they appreciate the gesture.
I never asked.
Some do - I receive their positive feedback.
Others don't reply at all.
I don't expect them to, though.
I share them to brighten their day.
As a rule, I don't send chain letters, religious and/or gory stuff.
I have 2 people who regularly emails them my way.
One is an acquaintance. The other, someone I dated briefly in Dubai.
He stopped replying to my personal emails. A long time ago.
Perhaps now, I'm just a name on his address book.
It's his prerogative. As long as he keeps them coming.
I'm game.

Ring Ring
My current ringtone:
Maybe it's wrong to say please love me too.
'Coz I know you'll never do.
Somebody else is waiting there inside for you.
Maybe it's wrong to love you more each day.
'Coz I know he's here to stay.
But I know to whom you should belong.
I get them by sending MYX TONE [artist] to 2366.
P15/download.
It's nothing compared to my expenses for international SMS.
I once finished a prepaid load of P300.
In one go. Like last night.
But I don't mind. It keeps me sane.
And no.
My ringtone doesn't describe my current relationship.
I just like the song. That's all.

The Podium
This mall is turning out to be my favorite hang out place.
It has a bank where I do all my monetary transactions.
Several eateries with wide variety of choices.
But I found out today that The Forum no longer exists.
Several coffee shops too. We are Figaro & Dome Cafe habitues.
It has 2 cinemas with guaranteed seats.
I like cinemas with reserved seating arrangements. Its convenient.
Today was my first time to watch there.
Cinema 2, row G7 & G8. 2:20 PM. Small but cosy. Freezing cold!
Guess what I watched?
"The Last Samurai".
Yes, AGAIN!
I convinced my sister to take time out from her toxic life.
I treated her to lunch and a movie.
Lunch at Penang. Nasi goreng for me. Chicken rice for her.
We burst into laughter upon realizing we both ordered chicken dishes.
Not really advisable with this avian flu breakout.
Oh well. Whatever.

"And the Winner is"
I woke up at 9AM and crawled into my sister's bed.
Surrounded by pillows, I watched the 61st Golden Globe Awards.
This annual awards handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is my favorite of all the awards shows. It's a great concept to combine the TV shows with the movies.
This year I loved:
Jennifer Lopez's tangerine gown, Grecian goddess style with a golden glow.
The simple soft yellow gown of Charlize Theron with ruffles.
The Sex and the City women always look great. No matter what they wear.
Nicole Kidman in a 20s era chic outfit and a playful headband on her hair.
The vagabond look with a fedora on Johnny Depp suits him mighty fine.
But on the other hand:
Meryl Streep in a black prom outfit was too frou frou for her age.
Renee Zellweger looked way too chubby in her tight blue calf length dress.
Diane Keaton's all white ensemble looks like she belonged in a Matrix movie.
Most of my predictions won.
Picture, Drama: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
Actor, Drama: Sean Penn, "Mystic River."
Supporting Actress: Renee Zellweger, "Cold Mountain."
Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins, "Mystic River."
Director: Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
Actress, Musical, Comedy Series: Sarah Jessica Parker, "Sex and the City,".
Since I haven't seen "Angels In America" I was surprised it won several awards for HBO. But I guess with a powerful cast it was a shoo in.
Miniseries or Movie Made for Television: "Angels in America," HBO.
Actress, Miniseries or Movie Made for Television: Meryl Streep.
Actor, Miniseries or Movie Made for Television: Al Pacino.
Supporting Actress, Miniseries or Movie Made for TV: Mary-Louise Parker.
Supporting Actor, Miniseries or Movie Made for TV: Jeffrey Wright.
I'm anxiously waiting for:
"Cold Mountain": I think Jude Law rocks. A love story always gets my vote.
"Lost in Translation": Foreigner in a strange country, the story of my life.
"Love, Actually": Hugh Grant. Need I say more?
"Something's Gotta Give": Jack & Diane. An older couple. About time!

Sunday Smiles
When I woke up this morning at 10am, my parents had left for the alps.
I went downstairs to make myself coffee and found this on the kitchen table.
Dear Girls,
Bought these bracelets for you. Blessed rosary beads, stress reliever.
Please wear them. This catholic calendar too for Ollie's office.
Check if leftovers in fridge still fit to eat.
Love you girls,
Mommy
Trust my dear mom to always brighten my day with her sweet notes.
Even if when I went down to get the newspapers from the lobby.
They delivered Manila Bulletin. Instead of the Phil. Daily Inquirer.
How hard is it to understand? On Sundays, it's Phil Star & PDI.
Even if when I checked my emails.
I got one from someone I rather not deal with. EVER again.
I promptly deleted the email. Without even opening it.
Thanks Mom for the bracelet Im wearing now.
I feel calmer and less hot tempered.
I guess... it works! Whoa!

Fatigue
I wonder is it just me?
Or does it seem to be getting warm already?
Maybe it's PMS.
Or the fact that I walked all over Glorieta. Then Megamall.
Running errands all day.
Or am I getting too old already?
I can't seem to be able to sustain a whole day.
Anymore.
I feel exhausted by 8pm!
All I want to do is get home.
Hop into a refreshing shower.
Then sleep. At 10pm!
Yikes!!!

TGIF
I like waking up.
On Fridays.
Although I work from home, I like the fact - it is the last day of the week.
I anticipate home cooked meals during the weekends.
It's also the weekend in Dubai.
So it's my.sms.Iyad.day!
It's not like we don't text each other during other days.
But there is a certain flair to it.

"They are all perfect"
Those were the last words of Katsumoto, the charismatic leader of the Samurais as he cast his eyes towards the cherry blossoms.
Heavily wounded and his body riddled with bullets, he takes his own life
to die with honor.
All the soldiers that were ordered to shoot the enemies, lowered their heads and prostrated themselves to show respect for a great individual.
That scene from the Last Samurai sticks to my mind, the most.
Tom Cruise was convincing as a flawed man with a heavy burden to bear.
But his transformation as a "samurai" was too far fetched sometimes.
The talented Japanese cast really carried the whole film.
Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto had a strong screen presence.
His character is a person you will love to hate yet at the same time
someone you can sympathize with.
He was very fatalistic, adhering strictly to the Samurai code of life and war.
The only woman in this film as portrayed by a Japanese actress/model
had such an expressive face and her beauty just grows on you.
Which character do I think is "the Last Samurai"?
My answer - Katsumoto.
I told myself I will only watch 2 movies per month. At the cinemas.
My choices were either The Last Samurai or Kill Bill.
As I sat there at Cinema 3 of Robinson's Galleria, I'm glad I chose this one.
It's rare that I come across a movie that really moves me.
This one did. I LOVED IT.

According to Chinese astrology, today, January 22, 2004 to February 8, 2005 marks the Year of the Monkey.
"People born in the Year of the Monkey are always alert, creative and playful. They are very sociable and sympathetic. They forgive, but never forget. They wait their turn. They are also restless and keep changing their minds. Once they decide to do something though, nothing can stop them from achieving a goal."
I have been browsing the Internet and found these interesting articles:
The Wood Monkey year, Chinese Horoscopes and Chinese Astrology.
I'm an Earth Monkey so this year should be good for me.
At least I hope so!

My Preciousssss
The whole family had lunch at Kaya Restaurant, Glorieta.
At 2pm, we watched The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
Cinema 3 of Glorieta 4. Reserved Seating. P140/each.
But worth every single centavo for a thrilling 3 hours and 20 minutes.
I liked this installment of the trilogy, the most.
1. I marveled at the intense battle scene at Minas Tirith, the capital city of Gondor. It featured flying dragons, prehistoric elephants, huge army of menacing Orcs, trolls and large eagles. The entry of the ghost army from the ships to join the weary warriors to fight the evil forces gave me goose bumps.
2. I liked the camaraderie between the grumpy Gimli, the acrobatic Legolas, the wise Gandalf, the prudent Aragorn and the joyous hobbits.
3. The multiplicity of the supporting characters such as Theoden, the courageous King of Rohan; Faramir, the least favored son of Denethor, the demented stewart of Gondor and Eowyn, lady of Rohan who can really kick ass - really shining through. Of course Merry, the ever cautious hobbit and his mischievous friend, Pippin Took.
4. The breathtaking scenery of New Zealand which served as an excellent
backdrop for Middle Earth. Especially the part where one by one the beacons were lit to signal the start of the war.
5. Sam Gamgee, my favorite character. His dedication and fierce loyalty to his master, Mr Frodo was heart warming. Ever so brave and always saving Frodo's ass. The scene where he fought the giant spider was applaudable.
6. I admired Frodo's tiring quest to destroy the ring despite all the obstacles and also battling with his inner self not to fall into temptation.
7. I pitied Smeagol's struggle as Gollum. Although I was never sympathetic to his conniving nature.
8. The musical score that accompanied each scene was haunting. The deafening shrieks of the dragons, the loud bullhorn of the armies, the macabre sounds of the evil forces to the ethereal music of the Shire.
9. Arwen's determination to become a mortal just to be with Aragorn, the man who holds her heart. True love conquers all.
10. The coronation of Aragorn as the King of Gondor was spectacular. Peace finally coming to Middle Earth and the dominion of Men restored.
My reasons why this movie was pure entertainment is endless.
But in essence, it was a fitting grand finale to a classic saga.

George Clooney
I went to the Podium today.
First to deposit cheques (my sister's not mine) at BPI Bank.
Then I proceeded to have coffee at Dome Cafe.
Always upstairs. The smoking section. I don't smoke. My sister does.
I saw this Vanity Fair magazine with George Clooney on the covers.
It instantly caught my eye since I love the guy.
So while waiting for my sister to show up, I drooled all over this article.
I loved him in Ocean's Eleven, the Peacemaker and Out of Sight.
I found him so funny in O Brother Where Art Thou? and Three Kings.
But I was disappointed with him in Solaris and Intolerable Cruelty.
Then my sister finally arrived and I had to get back to reality.

Do you want to know my deepest secret?
Meenee Meenee Mineemo.
Catch the beetle by the toe.
If it quarrels. Let it go.
Mee ... nee ... mi ... nee... mo.
Nah! It remains a secret.
It has nothing to do with smoking or drinking. Nor adultery.
I'm surprised I'm actually blogging about it.
Stupid me!
If I told you ... It wont be a secret anymore!
Would it?
Go figure!

Time is on my side
Tweaking has always been my weakness.
Thus a new look for my blog.
Besides I'm tired of lying in bed feeling sick.
Not that I got any place to go.
At least I don't get to spend money.
Although Im getting restless and itching to
1. eat at Italianni's.
2. watch the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King.
3. shop for new pair of jeans.
4. go for my monthly hot oil treatment.
Maybe tomorrow ... If Im up to it.

Awww Moments
- News that Carr, my dear friend is now 5 weeks preggie.
- Wilma, my kabarkada, gave birth to her baby girl Charlize on Dec. 29 after a succession of boys and several miscarriages.
- I received a parcel from Harsh, an online friend.
A lovely outfit in striking colors which enhances my skin tone.
A token of appreciation because I designed his website for free!
- Laureen, my best friend now based in the USA sent me a package.
It contained magazines and a VHS tape of Trista & Ryan's wedding ceremony.
They are the "Bachelorette" couple.
- Donna, my 'Sis' for her never ending moral support.
Her checking up on me during my illness ... even if she is miles away.
- My chat buddies bombarding me with 'Miss You' emails and offline msgs.
- Lastly, Iyad for being my 'Anchor' and personal cheering squad!
Thanks for making me smile.

It wasn't that bad
It may have been among the worst movies of 2003 but Gigli was entertaining enough for me.
Sure, no one would believe the fact that Jennifer Lopez is cast as a lesbian.
Or that Ben Affleck can really act.
Nor that Christopher Walken and Al Pacino would do cameo roles.
But it had its chuckle moments despite a very lousy plot.
Such as how to tell if a guy is straight or not by asking him about his fingernails. Maybe, I can try that trick sometime. You do learn something from this movie.
Yes. I hear you all saying ... Whatever!!!

I'll be damned!
So it was to be that barely a few days into this new year, I get really really sick. High fever, fainting spells, congested nose, dry painful cough, achy breaky bones and nausea! It even came to the point, I was so delirious I wanted my sister to find a priest to administer my final rites. Freaky!!!
I got my blood test results today and according to the smart ass doctor:
a. Im not pregnant - Its been ages since I had 'some'. Please don't remind me!
b. Im negative for HIV or the AIDS virus - I mean geeezus come on already!
c. I don't have SARS - I haven't been to China recently not even in my dreams.
Diagnosis - pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. Slight case of dehydration caused by dieting too much and stress. The holidays blues really hit me hard this season for reasons I cannot begin to fathom. So I drank too much, pigged out and went on an emotional rollercoaster. In order to get back into shape, I hardly ate and just drank water like a fish!
I guess my body was teaching me a harsh lesson.
One good thing about being sick - I lost weight. I wont recommend this method of shedding pounds to anyone, not even my enemies. I don't have any enemies though. But you get my point, right? Do ya? ... Do ya?
Do excuse my incoherent nature, Im heavily medicated, remember?
I better rest before I have another coughing fit!

Credit Cards
Firstly, i know it isnt the correct word but what the heck I like using it. It reminds me of my ex who also used to say crowdy instead of crowded. I didn't mind it since after all, english isn't his first language. What's up with me and my exes lately?
But I digress - I wanted to say that despite suggestions from my friends that I add pictures to my blog - I won't do it. It's just an outlet for me to whine, complain, bitch, rant and voice out my thoughts on everything under the sun. So it stays simple!
Why is it that when you feel like shit that's the time when the door bell never stops ringing? I woke up today with a sore throat and feeling little feverish.
Instead of resting, I had to force myself out of bed, looking like something the cat dragged in to:
- pay the guy who delivers the newspapers each day.
- sign on behalf of my sister, courier packages of magazines she writes for.
- show proof of a valid ID to receive registered mail from Citibank.
- receive a notice of a registered mail for pick up from the post office.
Citibank couriered me a Citibank Gold VISA Card. How did they know that I was a shopaholic? Don't they know I'm still paying for purchases I made in 2000? Is it their idea of a joke to make me bankrupt? No, thanks! I won't activate it. I already have AMEX, Citibank Gold MasterCard and Citibank Visa Card. Nope I'm not rich, except for the MasterCard, I rarely use the others. Their one purpose is to enhance the appearance of my wallet. Come to think of it, it helps boost up my self esteem.
A feeling of - I am woman (with purchasing power), so hear me roar!!

Template
Yes Ive changed the settings of my blog again.
Ive been tinkering with it the whole day.
I realized the old colours were too masculine and depressing.
Im bound to keep changing it as long as Im still interested - besides it keeps
me occupied and there are endless colour combinations I can play with.
I better let it go for now and sleep on it.
It's late and Im still sticking to my be-in-bed-by-2AM routine.

LET IT GO!
First of all, I changed the template of my blog since according to the astrologers, geomancers and feng shui experts, Green is the color for 2004!
Meanwhile, I received this email from a friend but easier said than done right? Don't think I didn't try!
If you are holding on to something that doesn't belong to you and was never intended for your life, then you need to.....LET IT GO!!! (my hair straightener?)
If you are holding on to past hurts and pains....LET IT GO!!! (OUCH)
If someone can't treat you right, love you back, and see your worth....LET IT GO!!! (Yes but he's busy!)
If someone has angered you.....LET IT GO!!! (Nope I can't tell their names!)
If you are holding on to some thoughts of evil and revenge....LET IT GO!!! (No I ain't)
If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction.....LET IT GO!!! (Is chatting an addiction?)
If you are holding on to a job that longer meets your needs or talents.....LET IT GO!!! (What job??)
If you have a bad attitude......LET IT GO!!! (Im still likeable ... at least I hope I am!)
If you keep judging others to make yourself feel better.....LET IT GO!!! (Well sometimes I can't help it)
If you're stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level....LET IT GO!!! (Somewhere between 1995 & 2000)
If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship....LET IT GO!!! (not just one but 2)
If you keep trying to help someone who won't even try to help themselves.....LET IT GO!!! (I've given up!)
If you're feeling depressed and stressed.......LET IT GO!!! (Who doesn't??)
If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying "take your hands off of it", then you need to......LET IT GO!!! (How's that?)
Let the past be the past. Forget the former things. GOD is doing a new thing! LET IT GO before 2004!!! (Ooops it's already 2004!)
Get Right or Get Left ..... Think about it, then LET IT GO!!! (I'll think about it and let you know!)

2004
Amidst the noisy firecrackers, the smog and the revelry we welcome another new year!
Some traditions my family always stick to year after year:
* Putting coins at the windows of the house so wealth would come in.
* Switching on all the lights so darkness wont prevail.
* Wearing polka dotted clothes to bring good luck but lately we just wear red outfits.
* Have money in our pockets.
* Serving pancit for long life.
* Jumping as high as you can - this was meant for kids to grow taller.
I guess it didnt have any effect on me since Im still as short as can be.
Which is fine since that makes me cute and I don't look my age so I guess it's a blessing in disguise.
Speaking of blessings, I am eternally grateful that despite my angst - I still have my family intact and are in good health, I have enough food to eat, I have a shelter over my head, I got clothes to wear and I can go anywhere I want to.
As for my new year resolutions, not that I do adhere to them but a few I will try to accomplish this year:
* to eat more veggies and fruits.
* to be more sociable.
* to be in bed by midnight, wait ... make that by 2 A.M.
* to drink less and just stick to water.
* to be less emotional.
* to learn to say "NO".
* to be more defiant.
So here's wishing we all have a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year filled with love, joy and happiness!!!
