Thursday Thirteen
My 5th edition: 13 reasons I will unfortunately be neglecting my blog in the coming months. But I will try to give progress updates from time to time.

13. I have movies to watch and review them on my other blog.

12. I have magazines and/or books to read. At the end of the day I like to clear the clutter from my mind and read in bed. Never mind if I fall asleep and hardly finish any of them.

11. I need to actually go for some medical tests. Nothing serious, don't worry. I just want to ensure I am in the pink of health.

10. I have to arrange my finances which means going to banks and filling up all types of forms.

9. I have to find a suitable apartment, our conjugal home.

8. Then transfer my junk things there.

7. But first I need to sort out which items I can dispose of and which items I cannot live without. So I won't suffer from separation anxiety.

6.I have to attend several seminars which would apparently help me become a responsible married person, kuno.

5. Go back and forth to the church to submit all the remaining requirements.

4. Get the invitations and misalettes printed then delivered to its rightful recipients.

3. Go for my gown fitting and make sure it looks good on me.

2. Try my darnest best not to lose my sanity, my temper and my poise before D day. Lest I end up looking like a raccoon instead of a blushing bride.

1. Lastly, I should prepare myself mentally, physically, spiritually for the next chapter in my life. With everything going on, I haven't really taken some time off (yeah like I can really afford to take time off now!) to fully process this big leap of fate. This journey I am embarking on with my eyes wide open and my feet firmly on the ground. Even though in the silence of my heart I truly know it is meant to be. In the words of my friend who emailed me with good wishes, she said:

"I am sure you have found the right partner who may not be perfect but “who is not only good to you but good for you as well”. "

I say Amen to that! =)

Theme Song
Yesterday at home, D and I together with my parents were chatting about a myriad of topics. The discussion lead to Charlie Chaplin (yes I know we talk about everything!). Dad interjected that the late comedian also composed some songs. My mother nodded and starting singing (yes she can be wacky that way) some lines from "This is My Song". This lovely ballad happens to be the theme song of my parents. A fact that I shared with D a long time ago. My mother then turns to me after she had stopped singing and asked me point blank "what's your theme song?" She was of course referring to me and D, I hmmm hesitated since I didn't know the answer to her question.

For the longest time ever since we started dating, D and I couldn't come up with a song which best describes our relationship. I did suggest a few like Carole King's "Now and Forever" and Billy Joel's "I love you just the way you are". You see the thing with D is he doesn't like listening to sad depressing love ballads. He prefers jazzy tunes. He also isn't the mushy romantic type. He isn't an emotionally sentimental person. So we never agreed on any specific song.

Anyway since I was put on the spot by my mother, I turned to D and asked him "Hon, what's our theme song?" Then I giggled because I knew that question would make him cringe. But he answered without hesitation "the one you keep listening to nowadays which was sang on American Idol" . Incidentally last week on American Idol my two favorite contestants on that show, David Cook (his version was more pop rock) and the nanny (the one with blond hair I believe her name is Brooke) both sang the same song.

So Happy Together
Imagine me and you, I do

I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together
If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together
I can't see me loving nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies will be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
I can't see me loving nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me, baby the skies will be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

So I blurt out "Oh So Happy Together"? He nods yes. My parents smile and said it sums up our relationship. I guess we have a theme song, after all. Never mind it is one of the corniest songs in the music industry. D chose it so it's fine by me! =)

Joke time
Do you know why so many marriages don't last?

Because at the wedding ... the bride doesn't marry the best man!

A Thousand Splendid Suns
The second novel from the author of "The Kite Runner", Khaled Hosseini got its title from a poem about Kabul. It was written by Saib-e Tabrizi back in the 17th century.

"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls
."

I had some time to actually relax a bit so I finally finished reading this rather poignant novel. I have always been fascinated with novels set in exotic places like Afghanistan, Turkey or some remote places I cannot spell. My bedside table is gathering dust with books yet to be opened and explored as I lose myself in its pages.

I admit this novel was a difficult and painful narrative to absorb. The rampant domestic violence, the anguish experienced by the 3 women characters as well as the sorrowful existence they endured was heartbreaking. But there were also some happy thoughts experienced by the characters like for example when the entire country was gripped by "Titanic" fever. Such simple joys for people who don't really know any better was uplifting to read. It is set amidst an intense background of a country ravished by the greed of colonizers and its own power hungry citizens, it was riveting, gripping and really incredible. I say incredible because as I read it in the comforts of my cozy little room, I cannot imagine a world far beyond the horizon where such struggling hardships are endured on a daily basis in this day and age. A period where modern electronic gadgets and endless politicking invades our senses. While far away in a forgotten land such basic services like electricity, water and food supplies are scarce and its citizens are subject to a steady stream of violence and anarchy. Of course, I know that it is only fiction yet I am certain this sort of existence does exist, unfortunately.

Written with easy to comprehend words, Khaled Hosseini's account of the lives of Mariam, Laila and Aziza is very compelling. 3 women characters who you can't help but admire and salute for their strength despite their vanquished spirits. It is a fascinating read. I really recommend it, just be sure you are stoic enough to tune out really disturbing situations. But then we are only human and you can't help but be affected by human tragedy even if it only unfolds within the pages of a haunting novel.

February Blog Carnival: A Show of Hearts
Toni of Wifely Steps came up with another marvelous blog idea. This time she is calling for bloggers to take pictures of hearts then post them on your blog. Link it back to her entry, leave a comment so she can make a catalogue of heart pictures at the end of this special month.

This is the inside label of my XOXO jeans which I have been wearing for ages. It is my favorite pair of jeans. I accidentally discovered it had a heart logo when I was hanging it in my closet.

Q & A

Hey Daph, are you registered anywhere?
Pinky | 02.15.08 - 7:35 pm |

Well I haven't been to the civil registrar office of City Hall to apply for a marriage license so no I'm not yet registered there. he he he

Now if you are referring to a bridal registry at either Rustan's, Regalong Pambahay or even Play and Display. No, I didn't go for this option because my wedding is pretty unconventional.

But if you *insist* on sending me something, anything, anyhow surely I won't refuse the kind gesture and truly appreciate it with glee. You do have my home address, Pinky! =)

After the loving
I mean after the rest of the world celebrated hearts day yesterday, today it was our turn.

Valentine's day I spent it trying all sorts of outfits in fitting rooms at Trinoma. It has to be said that this Ayala owned mall is located in D's neck of the woods. He had work from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. But he knew I would be there, shopping to my heart's content. I dropped several hints by texting him several times during the day. But what to do? The guy doesn't have a single romantic bone in his body. Later that evening when I was dead tired from my fitting room sorties, he tells me over the phone "Ay sana nga pala dumaan ako sa Trinoma sandali bago umuwi para nagkita tayo". ("Oh I should have dropped by Trinoma before I went home so we could have seen each other") Well duh such an afterthought! Besides as far as I know his name certainly isn't Susana (Ay sus sana!) But I cannot really change him (nor do I want to) so I will just accept him as he is - a non romantic dude.

Side story - in case you are wondering why we chose May 15, 2008 as our special day. Here's the narrative. June 11 is officially our anniversary. But since June marks the start of the school year, we decided to move it by a month. May 11 is a Sunday and somehow I don't like the idea of getting hitched on weekends. There is some fable about Mondays not being a good day to marry. Tuesdays is the Sorrowful mysteries of the Holy Rosary. My sister's car is color coded on Wednesdays. While my father's car is coded on Fridays. Ergo that left us with Thursday - May 15, 2008 which suits me just fine. It is pay day. It also gives us at least 2 weeks to wear each other out ooops I meant we will have ample time to adjust to each other flaws before he goes back to work for the start of a brand new school year.

Now back to our date. He is off on Fridays. Today marks exactly 3 months before our wedding. We had lunch at Pancake House in Galleria. Since it is a Lenten Friday, I ordered the Smoked Golden Tinapa. It is served with a fried egg on top of the rice and a mango and tomato salad. D had the Daing na Bangus with mushroom soup. Our conversation was pretty animated as we kept teasing each other about the final stretch. Then we went to submit our wedding banns and the permit from our local parish priest to the church where we will wed. Then I wanted to watch a film. It was either "Juno" or "There will be Blood". The latter meant going all the way to Gateway Cineplex. So even if there is a tinge of red involved in the Daniel Day Lewis starrer, we settled for a film about teenage pregnancy. I know it isn't really a date movie, either. But at this stage, I believe we don't really need to watch romantic films to affirm our relationship. Besides I highly doubt he will suddenly develop a romantic gene from watching romantic comedies.

I have 3 months to enjoy being single. The countdown begins ... tick ... tick ... tick away.

Color me Red

Here are the rules:
1. Post your photo wearing red, may it be a red top, bottom, the least would be red accessories if you hate wearing red… If you can’t find one, you still have an option…. Either post your Significant Other’s photo or your child’s photo, if you have one. Of course, they should be wearing red.

2. Let us know the reason why you were wearing red that particular day. Was it your birthday? Is red your fave color or was it the shirt that you first saw in your closet that day?

3. Tag 3 people close to your heart. By the way, they have to be in your blogroll. No cheating heart please.

4. Once you’re tagged, please keep it going - just for this month.

Just to remind you not to cheat: tag 3 people close to your heart =)

I was tagged by Girlie. I love to wear red but NOT on V day. That would be so corny. Here I am wearing one of my favorite red outfits. A red linen blouse I bought in Singapore. This picture was taken last week at Discovery Suites on the eve of my parents' 40th wedding anniversary.

I'm tagging Rach, Toni and Snglguy! :D
Third Thursday Thirteen
On this special day of the heart where the color red reigns supreme, I thee present an ode to my beloved fiance, D.

Sign at Sofitel Hotel Philippines

How do I love thee? Let me count the (13) ways:
1. I love thee for being my funny valentine. Next to my father, you are the one person who can make me roll over with laughter with your on the spot jokes. I love how you can make light of a serious situation without being offensive.

2. I love thee for being deeply religious. Dare I say not in the obnoxious way. Your deep faith has been influential in making me a regular churchgoer nowadays. Your spiritual views about life, love and everything else is comforting.

3. I love thee for being straightforward. Even though you always have a few jokes up your sleeves to amuse me, you do have a rather serious side to your personality. One that tells things as they are and not sugarcoat them simply because it is what I want to hear.

4. I love thee for being erudite. Your personal knowledge about Philippine history fills me with awe. Me being a stranger in my own country who is clueless about the heroes who shaped this great nation and the events which led to our democracy.

5. I love thee for being organized. My mother calls it "masinop sa bahay". Your things are all in the right places in your well arranged house. A good sign that you want a clutter free existence.

6. I love thee for being cautiously prudent. You always think of doing the right thing. Be it meeting my parents early on when we first starting dating so they won't be worried. To giving the right impression to your colleagues and friends as well as your family.

7. I love thee because you respect me for who I am. I've told you all about my sordid past. My past relationships were troubled yet you reassured me they are no longer relevant to our current situation. You never judged me for my past indiscretions. Although you do understand that I am the person I am today due to my past.

8. I love thee for being a caring person. You have a good heart and it shines through not only when we are together but in the way you deal with other people. You always put yourself in other people's shoes with acts of kindness.

9. I love thee for being updated with current events and issues that affect our country. Even though we don't necessarily agree or are on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to certain issues, I don't mind. It is a good fodder for discussion.

10. I love thee for having discipline. Whether in your job, your health or your hobbies, you make sure you do the tasks as instructed. If you have to wake up early the next morning, you set a strict bedtime schedule. You don't overindulge!

11. I love thee for leading a simple lifestyle. You don't have any vices, any hang ups, any qualms about life. If complications arise, you talk it out and simplify the situation. Your carefree attitude about dealing with situations as they present themselves is refreshing.

12. I love thee for being sweet but not in a vomit inducing way. You are not the romantic type who gives me flowers, chocolates or gifts but you are a really sweet person in your own unique way.

13. I love thee for making me feel special. I smile when I think of you. I feel my heart flutter whenever you hold my hand. I love you more and more each day. You are my best friend, my confidante, my partner, my lover, my honey bunchy, my life and my everything!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

The word is out!
The thing is D and I are having a really small intimate wedding. We chose the smaller chapel. We have invited only a handful of relatives. Mostly on my side of the equation. Mostly due to my mother's insistence that they be present. Even though I'm hardly close to any of them. My total guest list amounts to merely 22 people inclusive of D, me and my immediate family. The reception isn't really a reception per se. Just a bunch of people having lunch at a Chinese restaurant. No fancy floral arrangements, no table centerpieces, no wedding cake and no tingling of glasses for speeches, no special program.

We want a really low key affair. The mere fact that we will receive the blessings of the Church and the event will be witnessed by my immediate family is enough for me. It is more a show for practical reasons not for sentimental romantic purposes. Because after all, for humble little me, the fact that someone actually wants to marry me and make it legal in the eyes of society is more than I can ask for, really! So for that really simple reason, D and I didn't announce our engagement to our friends. Although of course I emailed my bestest friends about our nuptials. The key word here being "emailed" since they don't live on the same continent. And even if I want to invite them, I can't afford to pay for their airfare and their hotel accommodations.

But things have changed for D, unfortunately! It began since we posted our wedding banns at our local parishes, 3 Sundays ago. It turns out that in D's parish, they not only posted it on the bulletin board. They announced it before every mass and even have a projector onscreen flashing our names in bold letters. Yes you read it right! Every single mass not only on Sundays. Eeeps! Now his entire brood of neighbors, his childhood friends, friends of his younger brother (who now lives in the US), his mother's amigas, his barkada in the subdivision have learned about our wedding. He is now subject to countless teasing from making 'tampo' that they aren't invited to the wedding, to more 'tampo' that they had to learn about it from the announcement at their local parish and worse they will gatecrash our honeymoon. It is all in the spirit of good fun, I suppose. I'm sure they just want to be part of the happy occasion and share in our blessings. So we just came up with plan B - invite them for a little salo salo a week after the wedding ... that is if we can still "rise" up to the occasion. ;-)

But honestly?
Even if we could afford to invite all his friends, his co-faculty members, his neighbors and every single people he has met since he was born, the fact remains that I still want my wedding to be a cosy and intimate (non)event. After all, what truly matters (for me) is that I am marrying the person I love with all my heart ... even if I had to show up in jeans for it! And you guys know I surely would have but proper decorum dictates that brides should wear white on the most important day of their blessed life. =)

Surprise visit
D had to work today, Sunday. Our usual date day.
Therefore I heard the anticipated Mass yesterday evening. Today, I spent the day lounging around the house, watching inane gossip talkshows. My sister enters the room and tells me "D is here." Since I was very absorbed with the tsismis, I assumed she meant he was on the phone. I ask her for the cordless phone. She tells me no he is here in the flesh downstairs talking with Dad.

What??!

After I recovered from my initial shock since I don't like being surprised, I hurriedly grabbed some decent/proper house clothes and rushed to the bathroom to put on my contact lenses. Yes, I know I am vain!
My mother started kidding me "Awww how sweet of D to drop by, he probably misses you na". While my puzzled sister was telling me "you don't want your future husband to see you wearing thick eyeglasses?".

Basta!

I told them to hush and ran down to greet D with a big smile on my makeup less face and thanked him for dropping by. Apparently, his work schedule was cut short so he decided to hear Mass at my parish so he could drop by my place before going home. This despite having been up at 4:30 in the morning just to be at work by 7 AM and nevermind that my loft is way out of his place.

Now tell me how can you NOT love someone genuinely sweet like him?
Duh?!!
Yesterday I told my mother I was going to watch a movie (The Darjeeling Limited) by my lonesome self, she asked me "Pinapayagan ka ba ni D manood mag-isa?" ("Does D allow you to watch by yourself?").

What??!!!

First of all, D works on Saturdays so even if he could join me, he couldn't. He knows how much I love to watch movies so he doesn't really hold it against me if I watch without him.

Secondly - I have for the longest time always be independent. So if I want to watch a movie and I cannot find a suitable companion to tag along with me for whatever reason it might be, then by all means I buy a ticket for one! I don't really care if I am seated all alone. It doesn't bother me. I watch because I am interested in the film not what people might think when they see someone all alone in a theater.

Thirdly - I certainly don't conform to the idea that now that I am in a relationship, we need to do everything together, all the time. I don't restrict D's activities, either, In fact when I found out that his friends wanted to host a stag party for him, I encouraged D to go for it. Now if D himself is not comfortable with it then let it not be said that I was the one who prevented him from having a good time. He can be quite staid, sometimes.

Lastly - yes, a silly question deserves a long winded violent reaction from yours truly. By the time I was done explaining my stance, all my poor mother could say was "Ok just be sure you tell D where you're at".

This would have triggered another response of how I don't need to account for every single minute of my day to my fiance but enough said I just switched my cellphone to silent mode.

Thursday Thirteen

13 highlights of my parents 40th wedding anniversary celebration
1. It was a 2 day affair. Feb. 4, 2008 the eve of their anniversary, we checked them into a luxurious one bedroom suite at the Discovery Suites, Ortigas.

2. The room was filled with elegant floral bouquets of roses. There were even rose petals scattered on the bathroom floor. The bathtub was filled with warm water and floating rose petals. The entire suite smelled of fresh roses.

3. My sister and I stayed for dinner which we ordered from room service. We had beef oxtail kare kare, pumpkin soup, grilled rosemary chicken, potato puree, spinach gratin and steamed rice.

4. While they were still glued to the TV watching the live proceedings at Congress, my sister and I said goodnight so they could enjoy their overnight stay in the lap of luxury.

5. The next day, February 5 is the actual date of their 40th wedding anniversary. My sister and I along with D, my fiance picked them up at around 11:45 AM after they checked out of Discovery Suites. We planned a full day for them but we kept our itinerary a secret. They were totally clueless and quite eager to learn about our surprises but we kept it a mystery.

6. Our first stop was lunch at Max's Restaurant in Baclaran. 40 years ago after their very low key wedding with only a handful of relatives in attendance, they proceeded to have dinner at Max's all the way in Baclaran for their 'reception'.

7. We feasted on chicken (of course!), kare kare, pinakbet, sinigang na hipon, fresh lumpia, pancit miki bihon and buko pandan ice cream. It was a great family bonding moment as they regaled us with stories of their wedding 40 years ago. A truly nostalgic walk down memory lane.

8. To kill some time, we proceeded to SM Mall of Asia. Admiring the lovely view of Manila Bay from the 2nd floor as we sipped coffee at Seattle's Best. More conversation ensued with Dad and D taking the helm as we discussed everything and anything under the hot scorching sun. Funny thing is that both D and Dad were in matching maroon t-shirts.

9. Our next stop was Santa Ana church, the church where they got married 40 years ago. We got there just in time for the 6:30pm evening Mass.

10. My sister and I went to the church a week ago to offer a thanksgiving mass specifically for their 40th wedding anniversary. When the lector announced the special intention of the mass, my mother started crying right there. She thought that we were just going to stay a few minutes, say our prayers then leave. She didn't know we had made a special offering for the evening Mass.

11. We decided to head over to Shangri-la Plaza for dinner from Santa Ana. We wanted something light and settled for some seafood fare at Fish & Co. Fish and Chips were the main dish on our table.

12. We celebrated by doing a reenactment of February 5, 1968. We heard Mass at the church where they were wed that Tuesday evening, 40 years ago. And ate at the restaurant where they toasted their nuptials with a select few relatives. I was really glad that D didn't have work so he could join us for that special occasion.

13. We all had a grand time. It was a long day filled with nostalgic memories, bright hopeful prospects for the future and special thanksgiving for the blessings this family has enjoyed throughout their 4 decades of marriage.

Lenten season
Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the start of the Lenten Season. Last year I did not blog for 40 days. This year it is imperative I blog about every single moment which leads to my upcoming nuptials. So I can look back and tell myself wow how on earth did I survive that?

Ok I'm being overdramatic, I am doing just fine, so far.

I am thankful I have the sustaining support of my family. As well as my beloved D who continues to fill my heart with so much joy. I still swoon in his mere presence. I'm also amazed by his natural cheerful tendency to fill my existence with so much laughter and good positive energy. I sometimes pinch myself and ask what I did to deserve such a wonderful partner in life. This year, instead of sacrificing something for Lent, I will simply make a vow. A recent scare with D's health has been weighing heavily on my mind these past days. It has been agonizing as I called on all the saints in heaven and prayed like I've never prayed before in my life for him to be given a clean bill of health. But certain factors still worry me so I keep praying for strength. I hope I can be strong for D when he needs me the most. My vow is to be healthier spiritually, emotionally and most of all physically. Wish me luck in my endeavor!

Engagement Rings
I don't have one. Yet it doesn't stop me from browsing the Internet to admire the several varieties available online. James Allen is one of the most prominent online diamond jewelers which offers a wide range of engagement, anniversary rings and wedding rings. All beautifully encrusted with sparkling diamonds. Their easy to navigate website is comprehensively designed with information about all types of rings. You can even design your own ring, if that fancies you. They also have an excellent technical support on hand to cater to all your questions about jewelry. Valentine's Day is just around the corner so go ahead and indulge yourself. Wow, all these stunning diamond rings from James Allen is making me drool with delight. Diamonds are indeed a girl's best friend!
Discontinued brands
Yesterday while watching "P.S. I Love You" (the Hilary Swank film not the one with Sharon Cuneta) there was this scene which made my head nod in agreement. Lisa Kudrow's character along with 2 other women are stuck on a tiny boat in the middle of nowhere. Her make up kit is accidentally flung out of the boat and she tries desperately to reach it. Then she laments how she hates make up companies because just when you find the perfect shade of nail polish or lipstick, 6 months later they discontinue the label. I found that quite realistic and funny.

I understand her frustration. Through the years I've tried several brands of cosmetics, was totally devoted to them like they were heaven's gift to women then a few years later or worse just a mere months later I discover to my chagrin they no longer manufacture them. In the process, I need to switch to another brand, get used to the fact my new lipstick was a tad too pinkish or too amber for my lips. It is pretty frustrating. I soon developed this complex which made me think I was cursed or something. My theory was that I was the only person in the whole world who was buying that certain shade of burgundy lipstick, that blend of foundation/pressed powder which didn't make me look like a geisha or a certain brand of bloody red nail polish. Therefore the cosmetic company was losing millions of dollars just to cater to the whim of one single individual. Ergo for profit purposes they had to discontinue manufacturing that particular shade because I would only buy them like every 8 months or every other year! Yes I know I got some twisted sense of self worth! Now ladies fess up, I'm sure you have experienced this same dilemma, right?

P.S. I loved the movie!

On their main website, you can browse and read informative blog articles on anything and everything under the sun. As well as see posted pictures and videos from other users. It is a great way to promote your seldom read blog posts! So why don't you give me a buzz and join my inner circle? One more social networking site won't do you no harm. =)
