Movies review for this month
The Pacifier - Highly impossible scenario, the kids are bratty as always, cannot credit any of the characters for their acting so why did I bother to watch it? 2 words ... Vin Diesel. Physically attractive and nice deep voice.

The Forgotten - Alien abductions and memory erasing experiment conducted by the NSA which failed because Julianne Moore refused to forget that she had a son. A "Sixth Sense" rip off but it doesn't come anywhere close to making a single strand of hair on my body to stand up. Except for a few scenes where some of the characters are swept away off into the air, but those were expected.

Closer - this film deals with only 4 characters whose lives are entwined with each other. The fact that sex was a vital part of the movie yet you don't see them naked was refreshing. Basically it came down to how much you really trust your partner and if by lying or not saying the truth (there is a difference) you can salvage a relationship. Certainly, a very adult oriented movie which portrays infidelity, betrayal and love in a twisted kind of way. Natalie Portman was good, Julia Roberts was believable, Clive Owen came across as too gruffy to be a dermatologist and Jude Law's eyes can pierce through your core and you would believe whatever he tells you.

Le Divorce - a movie set in Paris so naturally I tuned in to watch it on Star movies. Kate Hudson's sister portrayed by Naomi Watts is dealing with her husband's infidelity. You have Americans living in Paris, the French in laws, some French dialogue, subplots (art, mistress angle, the divorce of course) and an assortment of quirky characters all bunched in together. Just another excuse for Hollywood to 'romanticize' la vie en Paris.

The Birthday Girl - Nicole Kidman is essentially a good actress and she can portray various roles to the T. Here she is a Russian mail order bride bought by Ben Chaplin to be his wife. She arrives in England, fulfills her wifey duties and in turn uses the poor chap to rob the bank where he works. It turns out that is her modus operandi and has done it to several unsuspecting guys all over Europe. Good acting from both the lead actors but my only complaint is that there were no English subtitles whenever she spoke in Russian.

The Wedding Date - definitely a chick flick. A single woman hires a male escort to be her boyfriend during the wedding of her half sister in London. Interesting that they (the whole wedding entourage) never caught on the ploy. Set in the English country side it was quite pleasant viewing. With a small hiccup towards the ending which nicely sorted itself out and voila another 'girl gets her man' ending. Plus you get to see Dermot Mulroney in all his (well almost) naked glory so ahem I'm a satisfied customer.

Finding Neverland - I guess you all know by now, Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors. Based on the true story of J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, it was a delightfully enchanting film. It brings out your inner child, your imagination runs wild and you start believing in fantasy. I was most impressed by the child actor who portrayed the role of Peter. His delivery was impeccable and his face was very expressive. But much as I love Johnny Depp I would have to say this early on that I would definitely give "Charlie and the Chocolate Factor" a miss. Too freaky for me.

The Interpreter - a scenario with a lot of loopholes but you have Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn to pull it through. It was the first film given permission to shoot inside the U.N. General Assembly hall. Alright so it was a bit dragging in the beginning and a bit predictable towards the end but hey it was good enough to convince me that being an interpreter is such an interesting job to have. But it does raise a lot of questions like aren't interpreters supposed to be neutral? If security at the U.N. is very strict how come it was that easy to infiltrate it? How does a guy who just lost his wife 23 days ago do his duties without falling apart? Alright I guess I'm being too critical, it wasn't that bad but neither was it good either.

Sahara - Not nearly as enjoyable as "National Treasure" but it was ok. Matthew McConaughey's little joyride to find a ghost ship, together with his comic side kick and add in a female love interest. Not really believable to see a W.H.O doctor roaming around plague infested areas with a lot of kohl eyeliner make-up though. Midway through the movie, things got a bit sidetracked (tribal wars, solar energy plant, tracing source of plague) and you lose sight of the fact that it was supposed to be a treasure hunt expedition.

My quest to find a suitable (affordable) dermatologist
It started this afternoon and lasted way into the evening. A friend of my sister recommended one whose clinic is located in the Pasay area near Taft. I arrived to find the doctor was out. Reason - she had a migraine. Her assistant told me to come back tomorrow, 10am-1 pm. Frustrated and visibly melting from the heat, I left.

Next stop - facial care center. So I called its hotline and set an appointment for a consultation at 4 pm. Time was tight, traffic was jammed but we made it on time, barely. So I fill out forms, write past medical history, products being used while sitting in comfort at their airconditioned office on the 36th floor of the GT Towers, in Ortigas. A lady in a white suit looking very professional ushers me into a room, examines my skin and enumerates the treatments needed.
6 sessions of Deep Acne Bleaching Treatment
7 sessions of Diamond Peel Treatment
4 sessions of Laser Tone.
It would span for 3 - 4 months, depending on my schedule. Then she hits me with the price - total cost came at a whooping P31,300. That is already with a P6,000 discount because of an ongoing promo valid till Saturday. My head aches, I'm hungry and suffering from heat exhaustion. So I mumbled something about thinking about it and hie my ass off their premises. Thank God the consultation was free. Phew.

So to recoup from the shock, my sister and I decide to fill our tummies with food before we starve to death. While munching on Pasta Italspagna and baked clams at Piadina, she contacts another friend of hers inquiring about another dermatologist. I call their office and find out her working hours are from 4pm - 7pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays. No need for appointments - just show up.

I check my watch it's 5:30 pm. So we discussed if we can make it before 7pm, checked the rush hour situation by sending an SMS to trapik.com, looked for Evangelista street (Bangkal Makati area) on the map book and if I should do it today or wait till next week.
Verdict - let's go for it.

I was again stressing out, my stomach was wracked with spasms from overeating but I was confident in my sister's driving abilities to get me there on time. Voila 6:45 pm on the dot, I made it. This time more forms to fill out, they weigh me (106 lbs) and check my blood pressure (150/100 - way too high). I go up and see a pleasant faced lady doctor in a tiny office. She asks me a ton of questions, trying to find the source of my break outs then takes a go at it.
She pricks, she pokes, she cauterizes, she injects and all this time I am laying on my back, I can see her tissue paper smeared with my blood and I try to focus on something else.
I look at the ceiling, I stare at the bright white lights, I clench my teeth enduring the pain, I close my eyes trying not to tear up from the torture. She prescribes vitamins, antibiotics, creams, cleansers and ointments for my face. Then she sets up my next session for May 7 at her private clinic in Mandaluyong City (located nearer my residence!) All this 'agony' for a mere P1,258.00

My face is terribly sore now. I feel it burning, it stings like a bee but I'm positive I will see the results soon and it's more affordable.

Thank God for small mercies and a sister who bears my inadequacies!

Virtual Monitor Cleaning
Your computer screen may get a little dirty from time to time. Someone emailed me this link to an application that automatically cleans your monitor screen. It may take a minute to load, but it works so well, it's worth the wait! Try it :)

I'm off to take a shower then watch The Amazing Race at 8pm.
Go Uchenna & Joyce!!!

Today
  • I was shocked when I read the papers, this morning. The headline "RP diplomat slain in burglary" flashed across the front page. My father served under her during our stint in Singapore. I remember seeing her at diplomatic functions and she was a quiet, simple person who performed her duties diligently. She certainly didn't deserve to suffer such a violent death. I hope that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are caught as soon as possible.
I also pray for her eternal repose.
  • I was melting in a pool of sweat as I went around town running errands. Gawd! Can someone please do something about this humid and hot weather??? The worse thing is I cannot quench my thirst with cold water, a bowl of halo halo nor ice cream because I still have this nagging cough. Arghhh!
  • I watched this movie at Podium. But the thing is I didn't make it before the 3pm showing so I ended up paying P142 instead of just P80. I raved about this promo (P80 for movies shown between 10 am - 3 pm on Mondays & Tuesdays) for months and now on the last day I still ended up paying a lot more than I bargained for. I could have gone to Edsa Shangri-la instead and only pay P120.
    Yes, I'm cheap like that.

  • Now it's shower time!

    OST
I have this habit of downloading songs which I hear in movies that I watch. Songs are important because it helps the audience remember certain scenes from the film. Like the opening scene from "Closer" where you see Natalie Portman walking in slow motion as Damien Rice echoes "The Blowers Daughter". Or Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon dancing together in "Shall we dance?" to the tune of Peter Gabriel singing "The Book of Love". So yesterday as I sat in the dark theater watching "The Wedding Date" I couldn't wait to get home so I could download this song by Michael Buble from Limewire.

    Home
    Another summer day
    Is come and gone away
    In Paris and Rome
    But I wanna go home
    Mmmmmmmm

    Maybe surrounded by
    A million people I
    Still feel all alone
    I just wanna go home
Oh I miss you, you know

And I've been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
"I'm fine baby, how are you?"
Well I would send them but I know that it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that

    Another aeroplane
    Another sunny place
    I'm lucky I know
    But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I've got to go home

    Let me go home
I'm just too far from where you are
    I wanna come home

And I feel just like I'm living someone else's life
It's like I just stepped outside
    When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
    Come along with me
But this was not your dream
But you always believe in me

    Another winter day has come
    And gone away
    In even Paris and Rome
    And I wanna go home
    Let me go home

    And I'm surrounded by
    A million people I
    Still feel alone
    Oh, let me go home
Oh, I miss you, you know

    Let me go home
    I've had my run
    Baby, I'm done
    I gotta go home
    Let me go home
    It will all right
    I'll be home tonight
    I'm coming back home

    Some very handy tips
Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horse radish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly -- even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.

Smart splinter remover...Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure ...Cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters ...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine ... A powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

    New Pope elected!
The CNN junkie that I am, my TV is always tuned to channel 36. So when I first noticed the white smoke emitting from the chimney of the Vatican, I immediately called up my mother (even if I knew it was way past her bedtime) to tell her we have a new Pope. After much deliberation to confirm that the smoke was indeed white, the bells rang to signal that a new leader of the Catholic Church has indeed been elected! It was very exciting as the whole world through the wonder of modern technology awaited the identity of the New Pope. I started clapping with glee when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany emerged on the balcony and was proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI.
"Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me - a simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord. The fact that the Lord can work and act even with insufficient means consoles me, and above all I entrust myself to your prayers."

May GOD bless him and give him the proper guidance to lead his flock. Amen!

    Client for Mr Jun
In order to snap out of my lethargic state, I had my hair trimmed, today. I swear this conversation happens all the time, no matter if I'm a regular client at their salon.

attendant: is that naturally curly or did you have it permed?
    Me: nope 100% natural.
attendant: why don't you have it rebonded?
Me: Ah no thanks, I prefer it curly/wavy.
attendant: How about having it relaxed?
    Me: Nah, it's ok.
attendant: It doesn't cost much, it's much cheaper than a rebond.
Me: Yes, I know but I don't like too much chemicals on my hair. Besides tomorrow when I take a shower, it's back to being curly.
Attendant: I guess you are used to it by now.
    Me: Oh yes, absolutely!

So don't bother convincing me to have my hair straightened, I'm too stubborn (matigas ang ulo) and nothing can change my mind.

    Ok I'm back
So what have I been up to?
    Nothing much.
    My muse has abandoned me.
I can't come up with a worthy post.
    I'm unmotivated. I'm lazy.
    I'm uninspired. I'm stressed out.
    I'm breaking out, literally.
    Pimples have taken over!
    I can't believe I still get them.
At my ripe age of 36.
But on the bright side, I'm feeling better.
I still cough a bit, though.
Even if I've drank enough pills to ruin the lining of my stomach.
I can't seem to shake it off.
So life goes on ... cough, zits et al!
I got work to do. (deadlines galore!)
Movies (Finding Neverland, The Wedding Date) to watch.
Pamper.myself.treatments to indulge in. (haircut, derma, spas)
A loft to renovate. (tiling the floor, repainting the rooms)
And a blind date to plan. (No comment!)
So I need to be in fighting form.

    I'm sick
    Yes I am! grrr!
So even if I wanted to work this weekend, I failed.
Thus I won't meet the deadline. Nice going!
But stubborn babe that I am, believe me, I tried!
Even if my lungs were on fire when I coughed.
Even if my head was going to explode.
Even if I was burning with fever.
So now I'm going to hibernate and rest.
Stay in bed as long as I want. I need to recover fast.
I got things to do. Emails to answer. Bills to pay.
Housechores to do. You get my point.
Yes ok I'm off to bed and drift away to this song.

Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart
    Michael McDonald's version

    You're alone all time
Does it ever puzzle you, do you ask why
You seem to fall in love, and out again
Do you ever really love or just pretend?

    Why fool yourself?
Don't be afraid to help yourself
It's never too late, too late to

Stop, look, listen to your heart,
    hear what it's saying
Stop, look, listen to your heart,
    hear what it's saying
    Love, love, love

Though you try, you can't hide
All the things you really feel, this time decide
That you will open up, let it in
There's no shame in sharing love you feel within

So jump on in, head over heels, and fall right in
It's never too late too late to

Stop, look, listen to your heart,
    hear what it's saying
Stop, look, listen to your heart,
    hear what it's saying
    Love, love, love

    Royal Wedding

So it goes that after almost 33 years of loving her Prince Charming, she finally gets to marry him. It was such an elegantly solemn ceremony. I have to admit though that I adored the late Princess Diana. But I believe that such a love story which spanned beyond 3 decades does deserve a happy ending. It seems like a fairy tale. But in the end, true love prevailed. How can you not love that?

    Interview Meme
I volunteered to be interviewed by Misty.

    1. I know you also have a movie blog. What is your absolute favorite movie of all time?
Well I have a long list of favorites movies but if I have to choose one it would have to be "City of Angels". Nicholas Cage & Meg Ryan starred in this movie. It's about an angel giving up his immortality to spend eternity on earth with a woman. Yet towards the end of the movie, she perishes in a fatal accident so no happy ending for them. But at least he got to spend some time with her. I appreciated the film because it is about life, about taking risks. To face the consequences for the choices/decisions we make during the course of our life.
"I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One."

    2. You recently took a trip. Is there anywhere you'd like to take a trip to that you haven't been to yet?
I've traveled far and wide so now I feel the need to explore my own country. Visit places like Bohol, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Pagudpud etc. Overseas, I'd want to see the Pyramids in Giza and set my foot in New York City.

    3. What's your dream job?
This has changed throughout the years, I have always been fancy free with regards to my career. Never been too ambitious nor overly motivated to establish a fulfilling career. I've dreamt of being during various phases of my life an interior designer, a personal shopper and lately an interpreter/translator. The latter being someone who would translate documents from one language to another. Not the one who orally translates because I would stutter and make a fool of myself.

    4. Is blogging just as important to you now as it was when you first started?
I used to blog in my sleep. Yes, really I would be in bed about to doze off then remember something. I'd get up, switch on my computer and blog right then and there in case I forget about it in the morning. But nowadays, I've hit a snag and can't seem to blog anything worth posting. So I may not post as often as before, but yes it is still important for me because I get to record my little moments and turn them into memories.

    5. I'm pregnant. So of course, everything is about ME. I cannot think of a name for my child. So please, give me your top 5 baby girl names. =)
    Daniella Marie
    Susanah Rose
    Mystral
    Sabine
    Laurelyn

I'm supposed to interview 5 people now but if nobody volunteers, it's fine by me. You can still interview me, if you want. You are not under any obligation, it's just for fun!

    Pope John Paul II, 1920-2005
I've visited Vatican City twice. In 1982 with the family and the second time in 2001 with my sister. We were fortunate to have been blessed by the Holy Father. An experience I will cherish for life.

May a choir of angels welcome him in their midst and may God grant his humble servant, eternal rest.

    Amen.

    Friday's Feast
Appetizer - Describe your week in one word.
    Interesting!

Soup - Tell about a funny practical joke that you've played on someone (or that was played on you!).
I was a very mischievous kid. I once left my younger sister (who was about 6 yrs old then) in the middle of the park. But I was watching over her the whole time hiding behind the tree. When she panicked and started to cry I couldn't bear it so I came back to get her. Me, being the ate (the eldest) my parents scolded me and told me to be more responsible.

Salad - Name someone you had a crush on when you were a kid.
I was the only Asian in my class and I had this huge crush on this blond haired, blue eyed classmate of mine named John.

Main Course - If you were a member of royalty, what would your title be?
    Daphne Laura, Her Royal Cuteness

Dessert - What colors are the clothes you are wearing today?
I went to first Friday Mass today to pray for the health of the Santo Papa, The Pope. Then I watched Vin Diesel make a fool of himself in "The Pacifier" but hey I love him. I wore jeans, an orange t-shirt with my orange bag.
