NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who are distraught after breaking up with a romantic partner show brain changes that are not seen in women less upset by a romantic rift, researchers report.

Specifically, women who said they were particularly upset about the breakup showed greater decreases in brain activity in brain regions associated with emotion, motivation and attention while thinking sad thoughts about their former partners.

Emotion, motivation and attention are "all factors that go awry in depression and now, it appears grief as well," Dr. Jeffrey P. Lorberbaum told Reuters Health.

"We speculate that brain regions involved in emotion, motivation and attention regions are impaired with severe grief," said Lorberbaum, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

These findings may provide clues to how the brain processes extreme sadness, and how that sadness can sometimes lead to depression, he added. "If we can first understand the brain basis of grief then we eventually might be able to help those who are disabled by grief, as well as understand how depression gets triggered."

In the American Journal of Psychiatry, Lorberbaum and his colleagues suggest that depression may sometimes occur when the brain becomes unable to properly handle sadness, separation or grief.

To investigate further how the brain responds to grief, the investigators performed brain scans on nine women dealing with feelings surrounding a breakup that occurred within the previous 4 months, involving a romantic relationship that lasted at least 6 months.

All of the participants were having trouble getting over the relationship, the authors note -- perhaps feeling as if they can't get the person out of their head, or still feeling sad.

During the study, the researchers noted women's brain activity when they thought sad thoughts about their former partner and compared it to the activity seen when they thought neutral thoughts about a person they had known for the same amount of time.

Immediately after the breakup, all women said they had experienced some symptoms of depression, although most added that the symptoms had started to fade after 2 weeks. At the time of the study, only one person was suffering full-blown depression.

Lorberbaum and his colleagues found that women who were grieving the most from the breakup showed the greatest decreases in brain activity in brain regions associated with emotion, motivation and attention while thinking sad thoughts about the ex-partner.

Additional research is needed to shed light on how normal sadness, grief and depression are related, the authors note.

Angst of an insomniac couch potato
Usually the highlight of my day would be unwinding in front of the TV absorbing whatever tickles my fancy.
On Tuesdays, my mindframe is set on Sex and the City.
Last night I was very keen on watching the first part of the series final episode.
A few minutes into the show, pfffft the TV goes blank.
Thinking my fat ass had accidentally switched the TV off, I grabbed the remote to change channels.
Horror of horrors ... all the channels were gone.
Hyperventilating I waited a few more minutes in case it was just a glitch.
Panicking since it had been already 10 minutes, I rushed upstairs to call the lobby and was informed the whole building was now TV cable less.
I tried calling Home Cable's 24 hour hotline but the line was busy.
My next option was to call my parents to check if their cable was off too but it was already late and I knew they would be in dreamland by then.
So yeah I missed seeing Mr Big.
I missed watching Carrie frolicking in Paris.
I missed viewing Paris, my favorite city in the whole wide world.
I must now wait for the rerun which according to the website is early morning Friday (New Year's Eve)
I was livid, I was pissed
But it was still too early for an insomniac to go to bed.
So I was forced by my sister to join her in viewing all 3 installments of a movie I didn't really give a damn about.
But she insisted that since I was into computer codes and programs ... I COULD appreciate it.
So I ENDURED almost 6 hours of The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions!!!
So although I did find the stunts and all those CGI enhanced sequences quite impressive, I still cannot understand the whole premise behind it.
Sci-fi has never been my genre of movies.

Oh I just checked the telly ... Guess what?
We still don't have cable!
So I'll end this post by quoting the Merovingian(Matrix Reloaded):

A change of heart
I was cooped up in bed during the weekend nursing a terrible cold so it was time I head out! So I did, yesterday.
Despite a running nose and a sneeze here and there I pushed myself to endure traffic and went ... tada .... Shopping!
My main target was the Glorieta, Landmark and Greenbelt area. But being stuck on Ayala Avenue for almost 45 minutes dampened my sister's mood so I said let's go to Edsa Shangri-la instead.
Wise move since it wasn't crowded nor jammed as we anticipated.
So we ended up buying
1. A Philips cordless headphones for Dad.
2. A gift certificate from Nail Bar + an Estee Lauder perfume for mom.
3. 4 kg dumbbells for my sister ... Don't ask me why!
That's what she wanted ok?
4. Naturally I couldn't go home empty handed for myself and despite the late hour (it was already 9:15pm by then) I bought this from Marks and Spencer.
Even though no one will see it ... the mere fact that I'm wearing it ..... would definitely uplift my spirits and make me feel sexy! *Winks*

Yes I've mailed the real ones through snail mail.
Only thing left are the e-cards, which I'm hoping to do this weekend. When I still have time to really sit down and scout through all the websites. We all know how tedious that task can be.
But I like doing it to spread the Yuletide cheers.
Oh I just received my first Christmas e-card from my 'sis' best friend, Donna. Woohoo I'm smiling.
For me it's the thought that counts.
Simple things make me happy.
I took a break from downloading foreign songs and instead searched for Christmas carols through this program. Then I burned them onto a CD and listen to it constantly.
I didn't do any Christmas shopping for myself or anyone for that matter, this year.
I'm broke and I didn't want to start the New Year penniless.
So that should serve as a warning for you ... do not get me to be the godmother of your kids. I'm terriiibly kuripot (cheap)!
But I've already bought the food though.
They are all stored in the ref.
I'm just waiting for Christmas to get here already so I can binge. I still have the sniffles thus I've lost my appetite. I've lost weight (at least that's what I keep telling myself) so my stomach is all set for pigging out. Bring it on!
It seems I'm in for a more solemn Christmas this year.
Despite unfortunate events in my life this year like my father suffering a mild stroke and me being single (yet again), I am still very grateful for the blessings showered upon me and my family.

That was a fairly amusing exchange between Hayden and Bolo in this week's episode of the Amazing Race.
I don't like Hayden but I find Bolo quite interesting.
I mentioned in a previous post that I'm rooting for them.




But now I've lost my respect for her.
She is such a spoiled brat and a bigot.
I believe that bigotry stems from the fact that some people are just plain ignorant about other cultures. But still it doesn't mean you can just go around making racist remarks such as "It smells like the sewers here", "third world ghetto" or that "Africans are so poor yet they breed and breed" or something to that effect. I can't remember really because I was wincing and squirming everytime Kendra opened her mouth to speak.
Berlin was a lovely place to race through. I always remember Germans as being quite friendly people and they do help you out when you ask them for directions. Also the fact that most of them do speak English helps a lot. The Detour was interesting to say the least. Beer or Brats. Roaming around a brauhaus chugging beers to the local folks seemed like fun. On the other hand, making those bratwurts at that meat factory got my mind roaming with perverted thoughts. But this is a decent blog so I won't mention what I was really thinking about! *Grins*
Of course an episode of Amazing Race won't be complete without Jonathon lashing at his wife. True enough, he lived up to his reputation as a jerk! Gosh someone please strangle that guy already. Sadly, Don & Mary Jean got eliminated this week. At least they got to travel and they seem to genuinely enjoy the race and were not too obsessed about winning. Oh and yes the Brandenburg gate is a great monument as depicted on the show. Only thing is when I was in Berlin (March 2001) it was undergoing massive restoration so I wasn't able to get up close and personal. Good thing it was featured prominently as this week's pit stop.

Outlast, outwit and outplay
Another Survivor season comes to an end with Chris winning a million dollars.
He was the one who should have been voted out first for fumbling at the immunity challenge for the Lopevi tribe. He was the last man standing among a strong alliance of women. Yet despite all his lies and his backstabbing, he wins the game!
Impressive really. But I'm glad he won. :)
So until the next installment of Survivor begins next year, this time at the beautiful islands of Pulau. I'll miss seeing Jeff Probst's khaki outfits and his dimples. But I will wait patiently!

TV Fare
I caught the cast of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason on Oprah tonight. I cannot believe how thin Renee Zellweger looked and I think the dark brown hair suits her. She said she is sporting it for her new movie, Cinderella Man. But I thoroughly enjoyed the witty remarks of Hugh Grant. He is so funny in his Brit sort of way, I always swoon and drool everytime I see him getting interviewed on talk shows.

Grilled boneless bangus & sinaing na tulingan for my folks.
Naturally bought sapin sapin & leche flan for desserts.
Then went all the way to the hills to feast on them for lunch at my parents' place.
We were all so full that we had to drink tons of peppermint tea!
I intend to go again next weekend. :)

I mean today is already the 9th of December yet when I went to Megamall at 4pm there were still alot of parking spaces.
The mall wasn't crowded at all.
I guess most people realize that it is a bit callous to celebrate when the rest of the country is still reeling from the devastation we experienced from the typhoons.
I think it is admirable when companies decide to forego of their annual Christmas parties and donate the funds to those who need it the most.
On the other hand, I squirm whenever I open the society pages of the newspapers and see the elite and socialites parading in their full regalia partying like there is no tomorrow.
Oh well. I guess to each his own pleasure!
As for me well I don't really do any Christmas shopping. The only things I buy are for the noche buena feast. Standard fare like keso de bola, ham, ensaymadas for Christmas breakfast and sweets.

Movies
I know I did say in one of my earlier posts that I wasn't going to watch the latest Nicholas Cage starrer. Well guess what? There I was on the 3rd floor of Megamall and my choices were "Birth", "Alexander" and "National Treasure".
So I assigned each of them a number, wrote it on a piece of paper and drew out one. Tata! National Treasure won! Yes I actually did that. LOL It was a pretty exciting movie. I liked its tales of hidden codes, maps and secret societies.

Ok this is like an embarrassing moment but what the heck I will mention it. I was one of the angels guarding the manger during a nativity play in one of the Christmas parties for the Embassy staff. This was way back when I was about 8 years old in New Delhi, India. I was wearing all white and the wings on my back were so heavy and kept falling off my tiny shoulders. LOL

BONUS - Is there just one song that you want to hear every year that really makes it feel like Christmas? If so, which song is it? Are there are any special instruments involved? (For example, I love to hear Carol of the Bells played by a handbell choir).

A week of "firsts"

"You know you sincerely love someone when you want them to be happy, even if their happiness means you're not part of it". First time since I met E that I haven't chatted with him since Friday. I had to take a break from him because my heart bleeds whenever he talks about the women in his life.

First time for me to go to Robinson's Pioneer (Sunday). It looks like a nice place to hang out in. But the best part is that it is conveniently located near my residence. Simply down the street.

First time for me to watch a movie at the relatively new cinemas of Edsa Shangri-la Plaza. (Monday) The P120 (matinee show from 1pm - 4pm) was worth it. Wow the place rocks. Wide screen, great sound system, reserved seating and the seats are big and comfy.
I watched "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason". Hilariously funny and a feel good movie. I love it when she said at the end of the movie "I truly believe that happiness is possible... even when you're thirty-three and have a bottom the size of two bowling balls." So there's still hope for me huh? A 36 year old with the same bottom size! Yeah right, whatever! (insert sarcastic grin here)

Today is the first year anniversary of my blog! So that's 365 days of endless yapping, ranting, rambling and pondering! I honestly doubt I would stop blogging any time soon!

Because normally I would get in the 'mood' December 8 onwards.
But this morning, I started decorating my place with garlands, lights and Christmas decors. I still have to set up the mini tree but surely I'll be done by this weekend.

Hopefully this would lift up my spirits a bit and not let SAD (seasonal affective disorder) creep up on me again this year.

I listen to a wide range of songs from the oldies to the latest tunes on the radio. I also like listening to Spanish, Arabic & French songs.

2. What's your number one favorite movie (of all-time)? Just one!
"City of Angels" because he gave up being an angel just to be with her. Yet it doesn't end happily since she dies. I like it because it is realistic in the sense that we don't really get what we long for in life.

3. What's your favorite city? Why?
Paris! I love the Seine, the Eiffel Tower, Le Louvre and all the other museums and the cuisine. But mostly just sitting in a quaint cafe to watch life go by and people watch.

4. Where would you like to go to next? Why?
Spain and Portugal. Simply because I've never been there.

Great bales of hay!
The moment I saw that the teams in the Amazing Race were in Sweden, I knew they had to feature IKEA. I love that store.
Their largest branch in the world is in Stockholm. Holy Cow I could spend days in that store. I definitely can assemble that desk with my eyes closed. Me being the DIY gal in this family.
I always knew Sweden was a beautiful country but watching it on the show made me more aware of just how picturesque it is.
But that last roadblock was something else!
Rolling through bales of hay to find the next clue is sheer madness.
I felt so sorry for Lena & Kristy that they weren't lucky enough to find it.
But hats off to Lena for persevering and not giving up for 8 hours!
They were a dynamic duo. Too bad they got eliminated.
I admire Don & Mary Jean for being the oldest team yet they are full of energy and have such strong will power!
But I'm actually rooting for Freddy & Kendra. I don't know why. I guess I just like their chemistry.

A post with a moral story
Why is it I picked the wettest day ever (yesterday) to go out?
I suddenly craved for home cooked meals so off we went to my parents' place.
Munching on sweet & sour fish, nilaga and tons of kakanin on a rainy breezy day was fabulous.
Listening to familiar tunes from Julio Iglesias, Claude Francois and Roger Whittaker made me sooo nostalgic of the good old days.
But alas it was time to leave and head back to the city.
First, we had to make a quick trip to Edsa Shangri-la Plaza for some necessities.
Next thing we know we are stuck in a horrendous traffic jam amidst a heavy downpour, my ulcer was acting up and my menstrual cramps was driving me crazy!
By nightfall, tired and soaking wet in more ways than one, we were back in our little loft, too tired to move but managed to watch "The West Wing" with our eyes open.
For the first time in weeks, I slept early at 1:30 am.
Yes siree, that is EARLY for me!
Now I think I might be coming down with something. Blehhh!

Moral of the story:
Wear a jacket!
Because trying to balance a handbag, 2 bags of groceries, an umbrella and laundry during the wettest day of the year wearing just a denim skirt and a t-shirt is sheer madness!

To rattle off a few thoughts

First I'm glad that Angelito Nayan, the diplomat/UN employee who was taken hostage along with 2 of his colleagues was released safely. He's now home and I'm sure grateful that this horrific incident is over.

I'm now more picky regarding movies I watch at the cinemas. A few like "The Manchurian Candidate" and "National Treasure" I expressly didn't bother spending my limited funds on. However, I do intend to catch "Alexander" and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" soon. I have to admit I don't like Colin Farrell but movies like these are best seen on a wide screen. As for Bridget Jones, two words: HUGH GRANT!

In my effort to curve my chatting addiction, I made a choice several months ago to just log on to my Y!M and MIRC. Little did I know that some of my friends who were on my MSN Messenger list were actually missing my ebullient presence. Especially since one of my good male friends in Dubai needed me to console him during his 'crisis' and I wasn't there! I feel bad for neglecting him but I felt worse knowing that one of the nicest guys I've ever met in my life has fallen into hard times. May God bless him!

Speaking of friends, a couple of them have decided to move to another city and start over. All for the sake of the bigger salary and even bigger responsibilities. I for one am constantly amazed how people can just leave everything and start over fresh. It certainly takes a lot of guts, something I'm afraid I never had. I wish both Iyad (my immediate ex) and Aoff - good luck in their new endeavors.

For some strange reason, my monitor has been acting up. It flickers then turns blank. To remedy the situation I would tap it several times. So I end up hurting myself. I got fed up so I yanked it off my computer table, got my old Compaq Presario monitor, installed it and voila it works. Incident free. Times like these I wish I had a 'handy' man around to carry heavy items for me. Isn't that what guys are ONLY good for? :D

Having lived abroad most of my life, I'm still not used to having Christmas trusted upon me as early as September. Now I feel like I'm the Grinchette of the 12th floor! Everytime I pass by the corridors and see my neighbors' decors on their doors, I make a mental note to myself "It's time I get into the Yuletide spirit and set up the decors at the condo". But I still haven't done it. I usually get them up December 8 and take them off January 3. I've never been a Christmas-y person. Even if I listen to Christmas carols repeatedly, I don't get myself wholeheartedly engrossed in the whole merry making and spreading cheers spirit. Yes, I am a scrooge!

My current obsession
I'm now hooked on foreign movies.
So my quest to buy as many 'artistic' films as I could find ... began at Megamall, this evening.
But we (my sister and I) needed a full stomach.
So first stop was The Rasa Express, the newest Singapore restaurant at the Megastrip. Reasonably priced, the interior design was cosy but the choices of food items are a bit limited. Tasty enough though so will definitely go back!
We were determined not to go home empty handed.
So we stopped at all the video stores on every floor, scouting every angle of each store and ended up with quite a harvest.
But I do lament the fact that very few French films are available here.
The guy who I chat with on a daily basis, E had recommended several good ones but I can't find them anywhere. Perhaps I need to get my butt off to Alliance Francaise one of these days.
I confess that my penchant only veers towards European/Latin American films.
For the life of me I can't stand Chinese and Japanese movies. Strange but true!

Anyways, I bought these:

2. Divine Intervention

5. Abril Despedacado (Behind the Sun)

My phases
I tend to go through phases.
A week ago, I was into anything French.
I downloaded several songs.
I listened to them till my ears bled.

This past week, I got hooked on Hispanic themes.
I've been listening to a Julio Iglesias CD of popular Spanish songs.
Yes, take note I said Julio NOT Enrique Iglesias.
His father, the suave crooner.
It is rather unfortunate that his concert (Julio Iglesias) scheduled for next month here at the Araneta Coliseum has been postponed.
I also watched these two movies.
One was lighthearted with a simplistic theme.
The other had a very controversial subject dealing with the Catholic church.
I have never been to Spain, unfortunately!
But I have a special affinity with that country.
Here's a little piece of trivia:
The first posting abroad of my father was supposed to be to Madrid, Spain.
But my mother was pregnant with me at that time. She didn't want to give birth in a foreign country. Me being their first born and all, she wanted to have a strong family support system here. So my father had to give up the post.
But there are times when they tease me that I should have been born in Madrid.
That the first words out of my mouth could have been "hola, arriba arriba"
That my name should be Amparo Constancia.
So God willing some day, I can go explore Spain and interact with its citizens.

And best of all compare notes via e-mail with my dear friend in the US of A who is a certified reality tv show addict.

What have I been up to?
Nothing blog worthy really. The usual.
Downloading mp3s. Mostly French songs.
Chatting but mostly with just one person.
Watching movies I borrowed from the video store, downstairs.
To mention one, Hidalgo was very pleasant!
Done a bit of work here and there.
Bought another foreign movie, "The Crime of Padre Amaro."
Feasted on steaks at Cafe Adriatico, Eastwood City in Libis.
And noodles at Oody's, Robinson's Galleria.
I also texted friends to arrange a rendez vous.
But as is the norm, they haven't replied yet.
I reckon they have much more busy lives to live!
And I need to set my alarm clock so I can watch "The Amazing Race 6" live tomorrow morning on Studio 23.

Hey what's up with me and songs lately?
Anyways, after completing our errands in the Makati area, my sister and I were in the mood for some hot soup for merienda.
Yes sir while normal people eat their dinner at 7pm, that hour for us is just snack time.
Since we were in the Makati area, I suggested Super Bowl at Glorieta.
But my sister wasn't in the mood to park there.
Our moods vary according to the parking spaces at a mall. Strange but true.
So I suggest Luk Yuen instead at Greenbelt 1.
But we saw Dulcinea where Luk Yuen used to be located, little did we know that it no longer exist!
Just goes to show we don't go out much. Well not to that neck of the woods, anyhow!
We instead ventured into David's Tea House.
So yeah we got our hot Wanton Noodle Soup, Beef Brisket Soup and several dimsuns.
At 7pm for snack purposes only! Take note!
Then it was off to National Book Store which is now my main source of VCDs.
I bought "Talk to Her" by Pedro Almodovar.
Yes I have a thing for foreign movies.
And foreign guys as well.
But that subject is not open for discussion.

Oh I also bought the DVD of "Before Sunset"!!!
Well pirated, of course. :D
Certainly not at NBS but somewhere else.
Where? I ain't telling because it might get raided.
Which would make me delusional!
But I'm really ecstatic beyond reason.
I can now watch it repeatedly and memorize the dialogue of the film.
Happy ... happy ... joy .. joy!

I finally watched it yesterday. Absolutely loved it.
I'm definitely buying the DVD!

I won't go into the nitty gritty details since everyone has already dissected the movie into bits and pieces.
How I felt while watching is another matter.
I'm an emotional wreck nowadays.
I had to take some steps to address it.
How? What? Isn't really the point.
Suffice to say, it had to be done.
I'm dealing with it.
It might not be the correct way to do it.
But for now, I believe it's my only option.
I just pray I make it without any battle scars.
But hey it (the scars) has made me who I am!
I've got my full battle gear so I'm ready!
OK ... bring them on!
